Getting a great sketch of your dog

Dogs are one of the most popular subjects for a sketch, and one of the easiest to get right, as long as the photo gives the drawing something to work with. The eyes and the texture of the coat carry almost all of the likeness. If those are sharp in the photo, they will be sharp in the sketch.

Most people make one of three things: wall art for their own home, a gift for another dog owner, or a keepsake of a dog who is getting older. The advice below applies to all three.

Choosing the photo

  • Get down to eye level

Photos taken from standing height look down on the dog and shrink the face. Crouch until the camera is level with the dog's eyes and the sketch will feel like a portrait instead of a snapshot.

  • Use soft daylight

Open shade or an overcast day lights the coat evenly. Harsh sun creates blown-out white patches and deep shadows, and a sketch turns both into flat areas with no fur detail.

  • Keep the face large in the frame

The more of the picture your dog fills, the more detail survives. Crop out empty lawn or floor before you upload. A head-and-shoulders shot usually beats a full-body one.

  • Dark coats need a bright scene

Black and dark-brown dogs lose their features in dim rooms. Photograph them near a window or outdoors so the eyes and muzzle have visible highlights.

Styles that suit it

  • Pencil Sketch. Fine graphite hatching that follows the direction of the fur. The classic choice for a framed portrait.
  • Charcoal Sketch. Deep blacks and smudged shading. Especially good for dark or short-coated dogs and dramatic light.
  • No BG. Removes the background and keeps only your dog on white. Useful for mugs, stickers and anything printed on a product.

Questions people ask

Will it work with a blurry or old photo?
Some softness is fine, since a sketch does not need photographic sharpness. Heavy motion blur is the one thing it cannot recover. If the eyes are a smear in the photo, pick another shot.
Can I sketch two dogs together?
Yes. Use a photo where both faces are clear and neither dog is hidden behind the other. Each face gets a smaller share of the picture, so choose the sharpest photo you have.
How big can I print it?
The free 1K version suits screens and small prints and carries a watermark. Any paid pack removes the watermark and unlocks 2K, plenty for an 8x10 frame, and 4K for anything larger.
